Two sides hoping to rediscover their mojo meet here as Champions League-chasing Aston Villa take on a faltering Brighton at Villa Park. Including earlier this season (W 4-3), Aston Villa have won seven of their last nine Premier League games against Brighton (D1, L1). Dating back to 1955, Aston Villa have only lost once at home to Brighton in 17 games across all competitions (W12, D4). Aston Villa’s only two wins from their past seven midweek Premier League games both came against Brighton.
Just one win from their last five Premier League matches (D2, L2) has all but ruled out any realistic suggestion that Aston Villa could win the title this season, but they do remain in the race to secure Champions League football and start the round eight points clear of Liverpool in sixth. Unai Emery will be keen to at least maintain that sizeable buffer by adding another three points here, although success at home isn’t assured as it was earlier in the season for Villa, who, having won eight in succession in front of their home fans, are now aiming to avoid three straight home league defeats for the first time since November 2020.
Lower mid-table Brighton travel north with manager Fabian Hürzeler under mounting pressure. His side suffered a 1-0 home loss to rivals Crystal Palace on Sunday, which was met by a chorus of boos from the home supporters aimed at the 32-year-old boss, and their frustrations are understandable given a 2-0 win over Burnley at the start of January has been their only league success since November (D6, L5). Hürzeler won’t be comforted by trying to end this run with a team who have the lowest Wednesday win rate of any current Premier League side (11.5%), with Brighton winning just three of their 26 games played on this day.
Aston Villa are aiming to avoid failing to score in a third successive Premier League home game. Brighton have conceded exactly two goals in four of their last five Premier League away games (D2, L3). Brighton have scored 11 of their 14 away league goals after half-time.
Morgan Rogers has been involved in four goals in his last five competitive home games for Aston Villa (G3, A1), while he’s also been involved in four goals in his last three against Brighton (G1, A3). James Milner could equal the all-time Premier League appearance record of 653 games in this match, having made 100 of his league appearances for opponents Aston Villa.
Neither side are reporting any fresh injury concerns.
