Table-topping Arsenal welcome surprise package Sunderland to the Emirates Stadium after both enjoyed commanding Premier League victories last week. Arsenal are unbeaten across the last 13 H2Hs (W9, D4), scoring at least twice in the last four of those games (W3, D1). Sunderland’s last away league win against the Gunners came way back in 1983 (D5, L13). Arsenal possess the Premier League’s best second-half record this season (2H: W13, D9, L2).

Last weekend felt like a pivotal one in the Premier League title race, as Arsenal thrashed Leeds 4-0 while their nearest challengers Manchester City and Aston Villa dropped points, leaving the Gunners six points clear. It was the perfect way to end a three-match winless run in the league (D2, L1), which Mikel Arteta’s men followed up by beating Chelsea 1-0 on Tuesday to reach the Carabao Cup final. Arsenal therefore seem to be well placed to avoid going three home league games without a win for the first time since May, particularly as they’re unbeaten in their last 43 home league fixtures against promoted sides (W38, D5), the joint-longest run in Premier League history.

Sunderland beat fellow promoted side Burnley 3-0 on Monday night to consolidate their top-half position, much of which has been built on their outstanding home form. Régis Le Bris’ side have only lost two of their last nine league games at any venue (W3, D4), proving the Black Cats are hard to beat wherever they play, especially now they have their African contingent back from international duty. Taking on the league leaders will challenge that resilience, particularly as they haven’t won any of their last seven away league games (D3, L4), the last three of which were all in London.

Two Arsenal players were booked in each of their last four home league games. Each of Sunderland’s last four league games produced over 2.5 goals. Only Wolves (one) have scored fewer first-half away goals in the Premier League than Sunderland this term (two).

Arsenal’s Noni Madueke scored and assisted against Leeds, and his last three goals arrived between the 20th and 50th minute. After completing the scoring against Burnley on Monday, each of Chemsdine Talbi’s three goals since joining Sunderland came after the hour mark.

Arsenal’s Mikel Merino is set for a spell on the sidelines, while Bukayo Saka is doubtful with a groin injury. Ex-Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka is unlikely to feature for Sunderland due to an ankle injury, while Bertrand Traoré is ruled out.
