Arsenal’s hunt for a quadruple continues in this finely poised UEFA Champions League (UCL) round of 16 tie when they welcome a plucky Bayer Leverkusen side, who have drawn five of their last six matches. Following the first-leg draw, Arsenal remain unbeaten in UCL action against Bayer Leverkusen (W1, D2). Bayer Leverkusen have lost eight of their last 11 away games against English sides, but did win two of their last three such encounters. Only three sides have picked up more than Arsenal’s 22 UCL yellow cards this season (2.44 on average).
Arsenal took another step towards the Premier League title with a 2-0 win over Everton, in turn extending their unbeaten run to 13 competitive outings (W10, D3), ahead of what is a crunch period for the club. This second-leg UCL tie is the first of three consecutive cup competition games for the Gunners, and they should be confident of progression here after successfully navigating 17 of 20 knockout ties when avoiding defeat in an away first leg. Under Mikel Arteta, Arsenal have also lost just one of their 16 UCL home games (W13, D2), and the fact that it was against eventual winners PSG suggests it may take something special to topple them here.
Bayer Leverkusen impressively followed up the first leg with another draw against Bayern Munich at the weekend, setting them up nicely to frustrate the Gunners once more on the back of a six-game unbeaten run (W1, D5). Not since 2001/02 have Bayer Leverkusen progressed to a UCL quarter final, while they’ve failed to even score in any of their last three away legs at the round of 16 stage (D1, L2). Coach Kasper Hjulmand may at least be cautiously optimistic ahead of this trip as his side are unbeaten in four UCL games, and have already won in England earlier this season with a 2-0 win over Manchester City.
Arsenal have scored at least three goals in six of their last nine UCL home games. Bayer Leverkusen haven’t conceded from open play across their last four UCL games. Bayer Leverkusen have scored as many UCL goals between 46’-60’ (G5) as they did in the entire first half.
Former Bayer Leverkusen academy product Kai Havertz scored Arsenal’s equaliser in the first leg with what was his fifth goal across his last six UCL appearances, extending his run of games in the competition with a shot on target to seven. Bayer Leverkusen’s first-leg scorer Robert Andrich has notably picked up three straight yellow cards across his last three games, while he also has two competitive red cards this term.
Leandro Trossard remains a doubt for Arsenal, while Aleix Garcia and Martin Terrier may miss out for Bayer Leverkusen after picking up knocks against Bayern.
