Following a midweek Coupe de France victory over Strasbourg (3-1), Angers set about bolstering their Ligue 1 survival bid, after Nantes and Rennes intensified the pressure with victories last weekend. The hosts’ campaign took a significant step back when they failed to beat bottom-of-the-table Le Havre last time out (D 1-1) in a contest that saw both sides reduced to ten men inside the opening 20 minutes.

Alexandre Dujeux’s men may have been disappointed by that result, but it continued a strong run on home soil that’s seen them collect seven of the last nine available points there (W2, D1). Angers managed just four points in their previous seven such outings, and the visit of Marseille for this clash presents problems given their underwhelming Ligue 1 record as home underdogs this season (W1, D1, L5).

Marseille kept their distant gap to runaway leaders PSG at ten points last week as they came from behind to see off Lyon in a five-goal thriller (3-2). Roberto De Zerbi’s men netted three times in a spirited 24-minute period in that clash to secure a pre-round league-high fourth top-flight win from behind this season and end a two-match winless Ligue 1 run in the process (D1, L1).

Either side of a game at home against Saint-Étienne, Marseille have two great opportunities to test their progress with trips to Angers and Auxerre, two clubs who they couldn’t beat at home in the first half of the season (D1, L1). The Olympians may therefore need to approach this game a little cautiously after losing their last Ligue 1 away game 2-0 at Nice, leaving them at risk of suffering back-to-back road defeats in the league for the first time since April.

Players to watch: Esteban Lepaul remains Angers’ key player as their first goalscorer (excluding own goals) in each of their last six wins across all competitions. On a similar note, the last four of Mason Greenwood’s 12 goalscoring appearances for Marseille this season saw him register their opening goal.
