After posting their worst Bundesliga defeat of the season with a 4-0 loss in Mönchengladbach, Wolfsburg have had two weeks to do some soul searching ahead of their league return. That was arguably needed as the Wolves now seek to show some bite in their quest to end a five-game winless run of league games (D1, L4), a sequence made more frustrating due to the fact they led in three of those games.

Resuming after the international break back at the Volkswagen Arena should work handy to Wolfsburg’s advantage, as Niko Kovač’s men have lost only to round 11 league leaders Bayer Leverkusen in home competitive action so far (W4, D1). Perhaps crucially in terms of a psychological advantage, one of those wins came against none other than RB Leipzig in the DFB Pokal, a 1-0 victory which secured consecutive round of 16 appearances for the club.

That H2H was particularly disappointing for Leipzig after they won each of the previous two national cups, but they at least managed to hold on to a top-four Bundesliga berth with a 3-1 league win over Freiburg ahead of the break. With 23 points heading into this round (W7, D2, L2), Leipzig have now picked up at least five more points than at this same stage of the last two Bundesliga campaigns.

Maintaining that upwards trajectory will depend on Leipzig ending a two-game scoring drought in domestic away action (L2), which seems likely as the Red Bulls haven’t failed to score in three straight domestic road trips since 2018. It’s not just finding the net, but finding it first which could be particularly pertinent for Leipzig here, as the side that scored first has won each of their away league games this season (W3, L2).

Players to watch: After helping Denmark secure safe passage to Euro 2024 over the last week, Jonas Wind returns to Germany looking to build on his eight-goal Bundesliga haul this season, which includes three braces. Set to join Wind at the Euro finals in Germany next year, Belgium’s Loïs Openda returns to Leipzig looking to make it three consecutive scoring appearances for the second time this calendar year after achieving the feat with Lens in May.

Hot stat: Seven of Wolfsburg’s nine Bundesliga goals scored at home were registered prior to half-time.
