Wales’ FIFA World Cup qualification (WCQ) destiny is suddenly back in their own hands as they welcome familiar foes Belgium to the Cardiff City Stadium. This will be the 11th competitive H2H between these nations in the last 13 years. Wales have gone winless in the last five since their famous 3-1 victory over Belgium in the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 (D2, L3), losing the reverse fixture 4-3 despite recovering from three goals down to restore parity. Wales have also avoided defeat in the last three meetings on home turf (W1, D2).

Wales’ path to a second successive World Cup – and just a third-ever appearance at the finals – is suddenly clear, as wins in all of their last three matches would put them at the summit of Group J. The Dragons trail both Belgium and North Macedonia, but face both in Cardiff across their next three matches. Boss Craig Bellamy will hope confidence wasn’t dented too much by a comprehensive 3-0 friendly defeat against England on Thursday, especially as that served as a third defeat in four matches (W1) after going unbeaten in their first nine (W5, D4) under his leadership.

Despite remaining unbeaten in this WCQ cycle (W3, D2), Belgium are suddenly under pressure in this group after failing to make their dominance count in a goalless draw against North Macedonia on Friday. A slip-up in the Welsh capital could be fatal for their chances, and they’re a far from bulletproof outfit on the road as they’ve won just one of their last eight away matches (D4, L3), with that sole victory coming against minnows Liechtenstein. The Red Devils remain a formidable outfit in WCQ action though, with their last such defeat coming way back in October 2009 (W26, D7).

Wales have conceded seven goals before half-time across their last four games. Wales are unbeaten in competitive home matches inside 90 minutes since June 2023 (W6, D3). Belgium scored 3+ goals on their last five wins. Belgium have faced just two shots on target across their last three games.

Rested against England, in-form Wales winger Sorba Thomas is primed to return having scored and assisted in the reverse H2H, forming part of his five goal involvements in this WCQ cycle (G1, A4). Kevin De Bruyne scored the winner the last time these sides met, and has netted in four of the last five meetings since Euro 2016.

Neither side sustained any new injuries from their most recent fixture.
