The two most successful nations in the history of the UEFA European Championships collide in the quarter-finals, with Spain facing hosts Germany in the knockout stages of a major tournament for the first time since the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup. Spain have enjoyed their recent history with Germany, not only winning that semi-final 1-0 but also demolishing them 6-0 on the final matchday of the 2020/21 UEFA Nations League to qualify for the finals at the Germans’ expense.

Not since 1988 have Spain been beaten by Germany in a competitive setting (W3, D3 since). La Roja head into this blockbuster clash as slight favourites despite playing on opposition soil after a hugely impressive run to this stage, with Luis de la Fuente’s men the only team to win all four of their matches. A come-from-behind 4-1 success against Georgia in the Round of 16 showed their mettle, as the three-time winners look to match their semi-final appearance from the last Euros three years ago.

Germany managed to avoid repeating their Round of 16 exit from the previous finals with a 2-0 win over Denmark in a dramatic game that was marred by VAR controversy and interrupted by lightning and hail. In typical fashion, Julian Nagelsmann again tinkered with his starting lineup, and it paid off immediately with what he described as “the best (20 minutes) of the tournament”.

After eight matches without defeat (W6, D2), the nation is again beginning to dream of their 28-year title drought in the Euros coming to an end. It’s been eight years since Germany reached the semi-finals of a major tournament however, and recent meetings with Spain are unlikely to inspire confidence given that none of the last four have ended in victory (D3, L1), with their last such success coming back in November 2014.

Players to watch: Midfielder Fabián Ruiz has scored in three of his last four internationals and Spain won all three by a 3+ goal margin. If the action is to come early from Germany, it could be through Jamal Musiala, who struck within the first 25 minutes in two of his three scoring appearances at this event.
