Luis de la Fuente’s perfect #1-ranked Spain side will meet a rock bottom and pointless Bulgaria in their World Cup Qualification (WCQ) quest. Spain hold dominance over Bulgaria after six meetings (W5, D1). The most recent encounter was an easy win for Spain in which they cruised into a 3-0 lead before half-time in September, in what was the first H2H between the nations since 2002. Spain have scored 2+ goals in their last ten games.

Reigning European champions Spain continued their perfect start to this WCQ campaign by following up thrashings of Turkey and Bulgaria with a 2-0 win over Georgia on Saturday. Anything short of taking another confident step towards qualification for a 13th straight World Cup finals is highly unlikely given that La Roja are unbeaten in all but one WCQ game across the last 32 years (W59, D14), while they’ve never fallen to defeat in a WCQ match on Spanish soil.

After conceding six unanswered goals in the last international window, Bulgaria opted for a change of regime with the introduction of boss Aleksandar Dimitrov, who ironically continued where his predecessor left off with a humiliating 6-1 defeat against Turkey in his first game at the helm. Pointless after three games, Bulgaria’s wait for a first World Cup qualification since 1998 looks set to go on, barring a resurgence of historic proportions, especially seeing as they’ve conceded 14 times across their last four away defeats, all coming within the last year.

Spain have scored in both halves in eight of their last ten matches. Bulgaria have lost each of their last four matches by a 16-1 aggregate scoreline. Bulgaria have failed to win each of the last four games in which they led (D2, L2).

Mikel Oyarzabal has been involved in nine goals in his last six international appearances (G5, A4), making this his most prolific period ever since his Spain debut back in 2016. Kiril Despodov provided the assist for Bulgaria’s ultimately futile equaliser last time out and may fancy his chances yet again having seen four of his last six international goal contributions come away from home.

Spain will be without the services of Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal and Rodri here amongst others, while Bulgaria are missing Fabian Nürnberger, who sat out this international break with a fresh injury.
