Portugal are looking to keep up their perfect start to 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying (WCQ) when they host a Hungary side they’ve never lost against previously. Hungary are winless in all 15 previous H2Hs (D4, L11), losing each of the last four in a row. Portugal are the only side the Magyars have faced more than six times without ever winning, including losing their last three away H2Hs by a 3-0 scoreline. Seven of Portugal’s last eight H2H goals came after half-time.

Portugal appear to be cruising towards a seventh successive World Cup finals, but they certainly didn’t have things all their own way against Ireland on Saturday night (W 1-0). Rúben Neves scored a last-gasp winner on an emotional night in Lisbon that was the Seleção’s first home game since Diogo Jota’s passing. It was a sixth successive victory on their own soil, maintaining a 100% winning start to this WCQ cycle that has Roberto Martínez’s men sitting pretty atop Group F by a five-point margin.

Hungary are their nearest challengers, leapfrogging Armenia into second place by beating them 2-0 on Saturday, bringing a timely end to a miserable six-match winless run in competitive action (D2, L4). The two-time World Cup runners up are looking to end their long absence from the finals that dates back to 1986, but to achieve that they’ll need an improvement on the road, where they’ve won just once in four matches (D1, L2), conceding nine goals across those three failures to win.

Portugal have kept just three clean sheets across their last 14 matches. Five of Hungary’s last seven games produced over 2.5 goals. Hungary have scored before half-time in three of their last four matches.

Bernardo Silva must be relishing this fixture having scored and assisted in the reverse (W 3-2), with each of his 14 Portugal goals coming in wins. Midfield rival Dominik Szoboszlai must serve as Hungary’s main source of inspiration considering that three of his last four goals for the Magyars have come in away victories.

João Cancelo and João Neves are sidelined for Portugal, while Barnabás Varga is set to return for Hungary after serving a suspension against Armenia.
