Poland will look to stay in the top two spots of their World Cup qualifying (WCQ) group when they travel to the already-eliminated Lithuania. Poland won 1-0 in March’s reverse fixture – the only previous competitive H2H – while Lithuania have failed to score in the last three meetings between the sides (D1, L2). Poland have conceded first in six of their last seven games on foreign soil.

Lithuania failed to protect a 25th-minute lead against Finland on Thursday, wilting in the second half to lose 2-1 and remain winless in Group G (D3, L3) – meaning that they have not tasted victory in their last 14 internationals (D3, L11) dating back to June 2024! With qualification now out of reach, the Tricolours are aiming to avoid ending a WCQ campaign winless – an unwanted fate that they have endured only once since regaining independence in 1990. Home matches haven’t brought cheer lately (D2, L5), although Edgaras Jankauskas’ men have at least been competitive in each of those fixtures.

Poland are in a tight battle for Group G supremacy, with the top three teams in the group separated by just three points heading into the upcoming matchday, leaving the Eastern Europeans with very little room for error to at least maintain their play-off spot. They warmed up for the journey to Kaunas with a 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand for a fifth victory over the last seven games (D1, L1) – a run which has somewhat erased the pain of relegation from UEFA Nations League Group A1. Jan Urban’s side can still chase the Netherlands for an automatic WCQ spot, but need to address their poor away form that has consigned them to three defeats in their last four trips (D1).

Eight of Lithuania’s last 12 matches have seen both teams score. Lithuania have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last seven home games. Seven of Poland’s last nine competitive matches have seen both teams score.

Gvidas Gineitis could be Lithuania’s best bet for a goal, having contributed to three (G2, A1) across his last three international appearances – six of his seven career goals for club or country have come after the break. Poland’s all-time leading scorer Robert Lewandowski was rested against New Zealand and has seen six of his last ten international goals arrive after the 70th minute, including the winner against Lithuania in March.

Lithuania’s Artūr Dolžnikov is suspended for this one, while Poland seemingly have no fresh absentees.
