With four wins in a row to their name, Italy turn their focus to a home game against Israel as the Azzurri look to secure a top-two spot in their World Cup qualifying group. Italy have never lost against Israel (W7, D1), winning each of the last five such meetings, including a thrilling 5-4 victory last month – the third straight H2H to see both sides score. Italy have scored before the break in six of their last seven home matches.

After beating Estonia and Moldova by a combined score of 7-0, Italy are looking to make it three straight home wins for the first time since November 2023. Despite their 3-1 victory over Estonia on Saturday though, they are likely only playing for second place in UEFA Group I due to Norway’s perfect qualifying campaign so far and phenomenal goal difference of +26. Indeed, Italy still face the possibility of missing out on a third successive World Cup finals, but on a positive note, they have scored at least three goals in three consecutive matches for the first time since June 2021.

Back-to-back defeats to Norway and Italy – both with exactly five goals conceded – have badly affected Israel’s bid to reach the World Cup as they face a must-win encounter here in their quest to make the finals for the first time since 1970. Anything short of upsetting the odds in Udine would see Ran Ben Shimon’s men definitely eliminated with just one game of their campaign left to play after this match. Three wins in their last four major-tournament away qualifiers (L1) give the visitors some hope, although each of those victories came against teams ranked significantly lower than Italy by FIFA.

Italy’s last six home goals have all arrived in the second half. Five of Israel’s last six games have produced at least four goals. Israel have scored at least twice in five of their last six competitive matches.

Sandro Tonali netted a stoppage-time winner in the last H2H, but his other two career goals for Italy have come in the opening 15 minutes, while he has also assisted a first-half opener in two of his last three Newcastle matches. Manor Solomon has scored seven of his last nine competitive goals before the break and he picked up an assist against Italy last month.

Moise Kean left the field with an ankle injury not long after scoring against Estonia at the weekend, while Alessandro Bastoni will serve a one-match yellow-card suspension. Israel’s Idan Nachmias was withdrawn just after the half-hour mark in Norway and could be absent here.
