Coach Hansi Flick has urged the need for ‘humility’ around the Germany national team after a hugely disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign saw them suffer a second successive group-stage exit. Flick has responded by leaving out several big hitters to take a look at new options ahead of the nation hosting the Euros next summer, with Antonio Rüdiger, İlkay Gündoğan, Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané surprise exclusions from the squad.
He’ll be hoping new players can inspire a change in fortune in a raft of friendlies leading up to Euro 2024, as Germany have won just four of their 12 matches since the start of 2022 (D6, L2). The four-time World champions have remained strong in friendly fixtures though, avoiding defeat in each of their last ten such matches on home soil (W6, D4), while they also won both previous H2Hs with Peru.
The South Americans face European opposition for the first time since September 2018, but do come into the contest in strong form, having come out victorious from each of their last three friendlies. Road trips have been somewhat trickier though, with three of their last four non-competitive travels ending in 1-0 defeats, suggesting a first-ever H2H win looks unlikely at the MEWA Arena.
La Blanquirroja will be looking to continue what has been a strong response to a heartbreaking failure to qualify the 2022 World Cup, in which they were knocked out in a play-off defeat to Australia on penalties. There is one worrying pattern boss Juan Reynoso will need to remedy here however, with Peru losing each of their last four games against European teams by a one-goal margin.
Players to watch: Bundesliga top scorer Niclas Füllkrug has scored in three of his four appearances for Germany, while he’s opened the scoring in four of his last six goalscoring appearances for Werder Bremen. Peru marksman Gianluca Lapadula could steal the limelight after directly contributing to seven goals in his last three league appearances for Cagliari (G5, A2).
