The two beaten semi-finalists at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Egypt and Nigeria, meet in Casablanca bidding for the consolation prize of the bronze medal. Nigeria have only won two of the last nine H2Hs (D3, L4), but they’ve had the edge in H2Hs in this competition, winning five of the last eight (D2, L1).
Egypt’s wait for a first AFCON title since 2010 will continue after they were beaten in the semi-final 1-0 by Senegal, consigning them to the bronze medal match for the first time since 1984. Not since 1974 have Egypt won the third-place play-off, but whatever the outcome here they can count this tournament as somewhat of a success due to bettering their last 16 exit in 2023. Their last-four defeat ended a six-match unbeaten run (W5, D1), and given that was sparked with a 2-1 friendly victory over Nigeria themselves, a return to winning ways to sign off their AFCON campaign on a high note certainly seems plausible.
Nigeria had been AFCON’s dominant force all the way up to the semi-finals, but they met their match in the last four and were dumped out by Morocco on penalties after a 0-0 draw across 120 minutes. The Super Eagles had made light work of everyone in their path prior, winning all five preceding games and scoring 2+ goals in each, so they certainly have the pedigree to secure a first bronze medal since 2019 here. History is firmly on their side in their quest to do so, as Nigeria have won in all seven of their prior third-place play-off matches, while recent history of nine wins from their last 13 games (D1, L3) also makes for pleasant reading.
Egypt scored no more than once inside 90 minutes in four of their last five AFCON games. Egypt failed to score in four of the last five AFCON H2Hs. All four of the goals Nigeria conceded at this tournament arrived after half-time. Nigeria scored 2+ second-half goals in four of their last five AFCON matches.
Egypt’s Omar Marmoush may take a back seat until the scoring has been opened given that seven of his last eight international strikes served as the second of the game. Nigeria’s Akor Adams netted in two of Nigeria’s three AFCON knockout games, both of which arrived after half-time – eight of his last nine goals for club or country came in the second half.
Hossam Abdelmaguid is suspended for Egypt, while Nigeria will welcome back Wilfred Ndidi from suspension but Victor Osimhen is a doubt.
