Teams from Brazil and the USA will meet at the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC) for the first time when Botafogo visit Seattle Sounders on matchday one of the newly expanded tournament, with both having only featured in one previous edition. It will also mark the first H2H between a Brazilian team and an MLS club since a two-legged tie between Vasco de Gama and D.C. United in the 1998 Copa Interamericana, won 2-1 by the Washington natives.

Botafogo were the last of the teams involved in this year’s CWC to automatically qualify, and will hope to create more history having reached the tournament thanks to a first-ever CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores triumph. The South Americans are also the current Brazilian Série A title holders, so although their only previous CWC campaign ended after one game in 2024, they might fancy their chances of a decent run here, especially after winning their last three competitive games.

Seattle, who were the only MLS side to ever compete in the CWC in its old format (2022), booked their spot in this edition that same year when they lifted the CONCACAF Champions Cup. Like Botafogo, the Sounders enter the CWC in the middle of a domestic campaign, and had been in good form up until June before losing both games this month in the build-up to the global showpiece.

Botafogo have won 27 of the last 29 league games which have seen them score first (D2). The Brazilians have kept a clean sheet in four of their last seven games, and have conceded just seven goals in their opening 11 Série A matches this season. Seattle have lost only one of their last 15 matches at Lumen Field (W9, D5). The Americans have failed to score 2+ goals in five of their last six games (W2, D1, L3).

Igor Jesus is Botafogo’s top scorer so far in 2025, and has had at least double the number of shots on target (14) in Série A this term of any of his teammates, while Albert Rusnák has recorded 20 goal involvements (G8, A12) in his last 26 Seattle appearances at Lumen Field.

Botafogo remain without long-term absentees Bastos (knee) and Matheus Martins (hamstring). Jordan Morris is Seattle’s all-time leading scorer, but this game may come too soon for him after suffering a setback earlier this month in his attempt to return from a hamstring tear.
