Argentina vs Peru Full Match Copa America 2024

Reigning Copa América champions Argentina became the first team to reach the 2024 quarter-finals by beating Chile 1-0 on Tuesday thanks to Lautaro Martínez’s late strike. After winning their first two games of the tournament ‘to nil’, Lionel Scaloni’s side now have the luxury of being able to rest players if they choose before meeting the runners-up from Group B in the knockouts.

There will be no hint of complacency or lifting the foot off the gas as La Albiceleste are on a run of seven consecutive international victories, five of them without conceding. That sequence started shortly after their last meeting with Peru (W 2-0, 17/10/2023) and they will expect to continue dominating this H2H as they haven’t lost one since June 1997 (W12, D4).

That’s a statistic that doesn’t bode well for Peru, as they must win to have any chance of progressing to the quarter-finals for an 11th consecutive Copa tournament following their 0-0 draw with Chile and Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Canada. That makes it hard to see how they can beat the reigning world and South American champions, even if, as some Peruvian media outlets report, manager Jorge Fossati is planning to make wide-ranging changes to his starting line-up. But all hope is not lost as La Bicolor won their final group game in two of the last three Copa América’s, including beating Brazil 1-0 the last time the United States hosted in 2016.

Players to watch: Martínez has now scored four times across Argentina’s last three games, with his last two coming in the 88th minute. Edison Flores is the last man to score for Peru, with four of his last six goals for club and country arriving inside the first 25 minutes.
